| Characterization of birefringence and polarization extinction ratio in large mode-area double-clad fibers |

Certain applications of fiber lasers demand a linearly polarized output beam. This can be achieved by coupling linearly polarized light into a birefringent active fiber. The polarization extinction ratio (PER) is a measure of the amount of cross-talk between the polarization modes.
In this work, a measurement method for characterizing the PER in large mode-area, double clad active fibers is developed. A thorough characterization with uncertainty analysis is performed on the system.
