| Infinitely single mode active fiber - “ridge fiber” |

The holy grail of fiber lasers is achieving a scalable aperture which always allows single-mode output. Current circular fibers cannot achieve this, and thus the single mode output of the current fiber generation is limited to around a few kW.
Liekki is developing a completely new fiber architecture to increase this limit, and in doing so we have received a small grant from US Air Force for initial demonstrations of the concept. This project includes the design, fabrication and initial pump testing of this novel design. The project renders itself both for basic and advanced degree thesis work.
In this effort you will be working within a group of top researchers in the field, exploring completely new domains of fiber optics. Due to the advanced and challenging nature of this effort, candidates must have strong skills in design and simulation (theory), lab work (including preform fabrication) and measurement techniques, be ready to work long hours, and have excellent problem solving skills.
